There is enough material in Gone Girl for at least two movies, and I liked the first one the best. All I’ll say is sometimes ignorance is bliss, and the journey can be more satisfying than the destination. After a thoroughly enjoyable first act, GG delves into a standard cat-and-mouse crime thriller, with some confusing and unbelievable character actions, complete with the convention where in the movies, apparently the only thing that’s ever on TV are news/talk shows that pertain to information about the plot, and inevitably, everybody’s watching. Still, I cannot discount what came before, nor can I deny that the movie was masterfully made. Directed by David Fincher (Seven, The Game, The Social Network) with beautifully haunting music by Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails), the movie features solid performances across the board, especially from Tyler Perry and Neil Patrick Harris, whose roles are small but effective. Fincher also directed Fight Club, another film which interestingly, I thought had a brilliant first half, then derailed into silliness. GG is based on a novel by Gillian Flynn, who also wrote Dark Places, which has a movie of it coming out later this year. I’ve read Dark Places. It is more straightforward and less preposterous. All in all, I do recommend Gone Girl for the promise it showed early on, the way it was made, but mostly, so I’ll have people to talk about the darn thing with.
