The Grand Budapest Hotel

Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel is slightly less pretentious and gimmicky than many past films of his, therefore making it mildly superior. There was an interminable amount of yellow in Moonrise Kingdom’s cinematography, and when I saw the trailer for Grand Budapest, I was afraid this would be The Red Movie. However, he refreshingly doesn’t fixate on any one color here, and does a more serviceable job of just telling the story without his usual distracting bells and whistles. Nicely done, Mr. Anderson. Keep purging items from your bag of tricks. Grade: B-
