I am not a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I go see the movies if other people in the family are seeing them. Black Widow, I must say, is as strong as any MCU film I’ve seen, and might be the best for me.
It contains great things. The action sequences kept me engaged and were easy to follow. I harp on about locations so much that the impact may lessen each time, but there is some spectacular scenery here. And carrying the film is a quartet of performances from actors I think highly of. Individually, they are great. All together, some magic happens. Scarlett Johansson, of course, is our heroine, Natasha Romanoff. Her parents are played by David Harbour (from Stranger Things) and Rachel Weisz (from Enemy at the Gates and the Mummy films of the early 2000s). But truly stealing the movie as the younger sister, Yelena Belova, is the increasingly invaluable Florence Pugh. She impressed me so much in Midsommar and Little Women, and is rapidly becoming one of my favorite young actors. She is a treasure in the industry, and I would see anything she does.
In Black Widow, characters survive too much (especially the good guys), there are a few too many cutesy callbacks to previous lines, not everybody’s accents are consistent, but there is a healthy amount of fun to be had here.
There is a post-credits scene, about which the only thing I’ll spoil is Julia Louis-Dreyfus is in it.
