Captain Phillips

The first time I heard anything about the story of Captain Phillips and the pirates was when I heard comedian Brian Regan’s bit about it. Now we have a movie about it, with one of America’s favorite Everymen, Tom Hanks, in the title role. I enjoyed it much more than I had anticipated. I was preparing myself for excessive, disorienting action scenes interspersed with endless conversations regarding facts about boats. What I got was a tense thriller in the vein of The Negotiator – a film from 1998 I admired, and am awarding the same grade. What struck me the most about Captain Phillips was the execution of the climactic moment we all know about (all music in the score came to a sudden halt for it), and the ending, which I found equally uplifting and heartbreaking.
