Grade: B-

I complete my journey through this year’s Best Picture nominees with Moonlight. Written and directed by Barry Jenkins, and featuring (with the exception of a few extras) an all-African-American cast, Moonlight takes us through the life of a boy named Chiron. The movie is split up into 3 different chapters, where we see Chiron as a young boy, a teenager, and a young adult. Moonlight didn’t click with me as much as it has seemed to for millions of others. I found much of it to be too grave, somber, and pensive to really take off and be something I could thoroughly enjoy. There are scattered individual moments throughout of some excellent writing and acting, and the much-praised final scene is very sweet, but that handful of parts was not enough to make a satisfying enough whole for me.
